Probiotics May Help Improve Mood, Researchers Say
(
Shopping-NewsWire.com
, January 14, 2016 ) Carson City, NV -- As more research continues, researchers are beginning to uncover the various therapeutic benefits of probiotics on the human body. Probiotics, often considered as "good" bacteria, have long been recognized for their
positive contributions to overall gut health
. However, a recent study led by a team of researchers at Leiden University in the Netherlands hints that probiotics may also be beneficial in improving mood.
"Probiotics are already being associated with gastrointestinal health, urogenital health, and even weight loss—but little is still known about its effects on mood. Studies such as this one can help shed light on this matter and unlock the potential of probiotics for improving mood disorders," says a consultant from Life Glow Products (LGP), a health company based in Nevada, USA.
The said study was tested on forty healthy young adults that showed no signs of any mood disorder. Every night for four weeks, twenty participants were asked to take a powdered probiotic while the other twenty were given a powdered placebo.
The powdered probiotic comprised of eight strains of good bacteria such as bifidobacterium and lactobacillus—which are known for lessening the symptoms of anxiety and depression. After the given period, the results showed that the participants who took the probiotic were much less susceptible to having depressive thoughts whenever they were in a sad mood.
"Although the researchers aren't exactly sure why probiotics can have a positive effect on one's mood, the potential is clearly there. My guess is that perhaps the gut bacteria encourages the brain to produce more serotonin. After all, around ninety percent of the body's serotonin is actually produced in the intestines so taking more probiotics will naturally lead to a better mood. No one knows for sure yet and more studies are definitely needed but just imagine what this could do for the mental health community once more evidence is found," the LGP consultant added.
The complete study on probiotics and mood can be read here.
